LEADERS IN AIR FILTRATION

SUMMARY
Our team has designed a mobile filtration unit that can be fitted in homes and the ISS. Our virtual prototype employs an ethylene scrubber. The scrubber functions as an isolated system, in which air recirculates, oxidizing the ethylene and destroying bacteria and mould. The C2H4 scrubbers come in a plethora of different forms, and do not affect organic substances in an isolated system through adsorption and chemisorption. As ethylene weighs slightly more than air, through an energy-efficient low pressure system, air is sucked into the prototype (with the help of fans). Our virtual prototype also utilises a calcium hydroxide scrubber (lime water), that scrubs carbon dioxide from the air. As carbon dioxide (CO2) is passed through calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), a chemical reaction takes place, resulting in the forming of a precipitate, calcium carbonate (CaCO3). The calcium hydroxide CO2 scrubber is a cost-efficient method to filter carbon dioxide in an isolated system.
For our physical prototype, we were forced to utilise little equipment due to the COVID-19 lockdown. We were fortunate to have access to a workshop with a myriad of tools and equipment. Our physical prototype was comprised of layers of pool filters, recycled plywood, and plastic shields. We used little to none external materials and repurposed other DIY materials and electronic components like LCD screens, jumper cables, computer fans and pool filters. With e-waste a prevalent issue in modern-day society, our group utilises minimal wasteful equipment, and repurposes old materials.
